Aug. 17th, 2007 11:14 pmTonight, my Tang Soo Do dojang had a small function at a local restaurant to thank me for all of the time and effort I've spent helping in the dojang. Much to my surprise, 33 people showed up, including Mr. Carraway the Chief Instructor, Master Hansley, all my training partners, and their families.
Miss Cat, the grandmother of one of the members of the children's class who has spent the entire year yelling at me from the back of the room every time I was slow or made a mistake (roughly every class), I invited to sit next to me - mostly in self defense. *smile* She bought my dinner, again to my surprise, and thanked me for teaching her granddaughter.
I taught her grandaughter by getting yelled at and taking the blame, because the dojang listens and learns when the Helper gets it wrong, and then they don't make the same error. Everyone had a funny story of how I'd helped them learn something, things that I had forgotten I'd helped with, or hadn't realized were that significant at the time. I was given a toy mouse, dressed in a do bok - and when you squeeze his hand, he sings 'Kung Fu Fighting' and twirls his nunchaku.
I've been a bit hard on myself recently for some energy/relationship lessons, and it was nice to realize I've taught and helped a dojang of children and adults grow.
