101/1001 Update; End of List #5
Jun. 6th, 2022 11:59 pmI think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom. – Bob Dylan
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I'm currently on an every-other-day daily regimen of 200 pushups, taking recovery days off periodically to rest my shoulder and biceps when I need it (the day after SOAK). I'm still, on workdays, doing 200 pushups with an extra set of max reps with the pushup bars, and two sets of 25 forearm grippers. I've trained in three Qigong/Tai Chi classes this week, staying masked. Now that I have moved into the advanced group, I'm starting to explore the Chen Style.
There's been very little progress on any GoRuck Challenge. I'm almost finished reading Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor. We still have April's WOD and March's bonus WOD, to complete, and all of May's GoRuck 'Reverence' Challenge tasks, and now we have June's 'Dare' Challenge. Now that Safety NW and SOAK are over, we are serious about getting caught up.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I've still reading The Chinese Martial Code: The Art of War of Sun Tzu, The Precepts of War by Sima Rangju, Wu Zi on the Art of War by A. L. Sadler. I completed my daily meditation practice for May, completing another 101 goal, including a formal virtual Zazen 'sit', also known as shikantaza, or the do-nothing meditation of Zen Buddhism, and a live stream Zazen 'sit' with Zen Master Hinnerk Polenski, completing yet another 101 goal.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: The daily driver has been dropped off for her off-road lighting.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: The SuperSecret Special Project has been completed! The ugly widowmaker stumps that were left shortly after I started working to develop Base Station have been transformed by a local chainsaw artist into a pair of Fu Dogs to protect the property. We need to let them dry, then apply wood hardener, varnish, and urethane, but they already look awesome. *smile* I also cleared and organized the Pump House after the chaos of the winter and the electrical work and inspection, and cleared the driver's seat in Ol' Number 3. I'm still working on the septic system plan.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: This weekend we attended SOAK, the Regional Burning Man for the Portland area. It was, for me, a lot of work but very satisfying. Thursday we Fire Leads put on an on-site training, mostly familiarizing volunteer crews with the engine, hose dynamics, and attack line movement and transfers. Friday I did a 12-hour shift as the Fire Safety Lead (Duty Chief) and ran more drills and had my crews practice moving the Engine and deploying an attack line in case we had an actual fire. Saturday and Sunday I was the LT of Hose Line Two, protecting the crowd and the land (wildfire mitigation) while we burned the large fire art. For the Saturday night Burn, I ran the aggressive line, with a lot of dynamic movement and fire suppression around the Burn, protecting the crowd and the event, and for Sunday Night Temple Burn I ran the defensive line, protecting the hillside where the wildland fire risk was the highest. We were complimented by the local fire department, who had come out to supervise the Burn. I also did a shift as a SOAK Ranger, ate a variety of amazing food and drank a little bit of whiskey, got a good sunburn, and reconnected with some of the Burner Community after several years. I'd missed that.
For the last few hours of List #5, we went to the Jack White concert - he was very high energy and overwhelmed and numbed the crowd for a weird concert experience. The Backstreet Lovers opened for them, their first time playing in an arena, and they weren't very good at warming up the crowd. Overall, not a bad show.
Now that List #5 is finished, I'll take a week or so and review, reassess, and create another list.
