Firefighter Intern: Day 13
Jun. 7th, 2018 07:27 pmTrain Like Your Life Depends On It, Because It Does! - firefighter saying
Today we started off with a very short safety meeting, and then we got going on our house chores, including dropping off wood at our training ground for wildland firefighting practice in the near future. Once we got back we started lunch, but we dropped our sandwiches mid-bite - we were toned out for a vehicle fire that we couldn't locate. It was good practice responding and gearing up, getting all our turnouts including our mask on except for the regulator so we can get out the door of the engine and quickly get to work. My job as the second firefighter is to get the irons (an axe and a Halligan tool) and get the car open quickly (possibly violently!) for the attack line from the first firefighter.
Once we got back we restarted a quick lunch, then we had a 'washing party' for Medic 481, Engine 478 (still using St. Helen's engine while our first-out engine is being repainted), and Utility 482 - all filthy by firefighter standards. We were toned out for a medical call mid-afternoon assisting Columbia County Sheriff's office - we assessed a pretty medically fragile vet in handcuffs and made sure he was okay to be detained by CCSO. Around all this, I finished my last assignment, my online posts, and my last quiz for my class - only the final and the course project left.
For a change, we had only one walk-up medical call for a very pregnant lady with an elevated blood pressure about 10pm- and we got some good sleep after that. *smile*
I'm only working one day this week because tonight I'm seeing the Barenaked Ladies concert with Carla.
