grim23: (Firefighter Intern)
In fire you can plan everything out to the minute, and a minute before that everything changes. - Dan Felix

First thing after getting a quick cup of coffee, we were toned out for a reported ground cover fire that tuned out to be a controlled burn with the city Public Works. Once back, we did a few house chores and then I got in my firefighter fitness regimen of 5 laps (two miles), then lunch. We didn't have anything specific to do today, so we were allowed to take on an individual project. I picked the task of organizing the Intern old text book locker - and cleaned out books from the 80s and 90s. I kept some of the books for myself that I might use - as I'm starting EMT school on Monday. *smile*

We've had the first day of our latest Fire Fighter Academy; although I've already graduated in 2015, I'm doing most of it again for the skills practice. In the evening, we had a patient lift assist with a woman who was having heart problems, so we chased the Medic 483 in the Engine, as U482 was out with the paid staff for Marine Fire training. No other calls, so we all slept well - although with all of the folks transitioning and with the Fire Fighter Academy, we had extra people and I ended up sleeping in the breakroom.

In the evening, we got as walk-up of a 3-year-old who had fallen and hit his chin, and his mother was concerned - so we checked him out medically, and then I got to give him a tour of the station. He got to sit in all of the Fire Engines, the Rescue, and a Medic Unit and see the whole station - and he got some stickers and swag we keep for children. *grin* He, and his mother left feeling much better than when they came in.

We had just gotten solidly to sleep when we toned out for a ground cover fire at about 12:30 am. I was assigned Heavy Brush 482, and we geared up and went. I was the nozzleman for a non-permitted slash pile that was left unattended, with nearby homes. I put all of the thousand gallons on the fire, hitting the hot spots and getting good suppression. After it was over, and we were on the way back to the station - I realized that I'd gotten another sign-off completed. *smile*

There are five other people in the Firefighter Academy - a 17-year-old woman, with 4 years of experience already from the Explorers Program, a 25-year-old female Cross-fit Trainer, already an EMT, a 40ish-year-old male local mechanic, and a 50-ish-year-old former EMT recovering from some physical disabilities. Today we spent time in turnouts and SCBA, practicing movement and air management, and using fire extinguishers for ground cover fires.

I managed to get a lot of sign-offs on my taskbook, leaving only Firefighter Survival and Victim Search, Vehicle Fires, and Vertical Ventilation left to complete my taskbook. Good progress!
