101/1001 Update
Apr. 3rd, 2021 10:39 pmThe most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. - Amelia Earhart
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: The April GoRuck 'Endure' challenge has dropped. For the patch this month, we're going to have to ruck a 12-Miler and also 10 days of consecutive rucking (2+ miles), read The White Darkness by David Grann, complete the Bataan Memorial WOD (9 rounds of 10 Burpees, 11 Deadlifts, 12 Thrusters with Ruck, 13 American Twists with Ruck, 14 Arm Circles, 15 Neck Circles, 16 Sit-Ups with Ruck, and 170m 'Marches'), and complete the additional tasking of "Dream up something big, something you have at least a 50% chance of failing. Write it down somewhere you’ll be reminded of it often. Do something symbolic to take the first step down that path, then endure it as long as you can."
Ok, then. I will see if I can complete my 100 consecutive burpees goal, and my passing both the APFT/MARSOC Short Card goal, and completing the Base Station RV Dump goal. I'm making progress with my 100 consecutive burpee goal. I completed 10x10 burpees, with one-minute breaks; my next small goal is 5x20, with one-minute breaks. All of my burpee sets will now be 20 burpees. I will be cutting back on pushups slightly until I have adjusted to adding this goal to my mostly daily workout. This is also training for the APFT and MARSOC Short Card goals. See the Base Station section for RV Dump progress.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I completed meditating daily through March, and I am continuing my mindful eating practice. I finished reading Soul of the Samurai: Modern Translations of Three Works of Zen & Bushido, by Thomas Cleary. I'm still reading The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars, and Save Our Lives by Shankar Vedantam. So far, a good but basic book of unconscious biases. I'm starting Meditations 4, by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffery Degraff), the Abbot of the Metta Forest Monastery in San Diego County, California — the first monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition in the US.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I have renewed both my Oregon and my national EMT license for the next two years. My office bookcase has been built and installed over my desk and filled with a bunch of (formerly clutter) books and office supplies, and a client lending library. I'm ready for clients when the OHA determines that seeing clients face-to-face is a good idea. I have completed another CEU class on DBT and Trauma, just because we can all use all the insights we can get right now. I have scheduled my dental appointment. Dad's surgery and COVID-19 testing are coming up this week.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm still doing a weekly 3-hour comprehensive EMT refresher online. This week: Shock. The station is slowly reopening as Columbia County goes to Moderate Risk, and I'll be eligible to volunteer as soon as I get my annual online certifications done.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: We were able to get to and move the one bookcase The Old Man wanted from storage into the Gate House, finishing the 'move The Old Man into the Gate House' goal. There was more digging of the RV dump trench, and we laid pipe in the trench from the RV to ten feet past the first turn toward the septic tank. There's one high spot in the trench we're going to have to level, and then we can backfill. There are about fifty feet to go.
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: Faye and The Old Man and I took a day trip to Fort Stephens for an informal masked and socially distanced geocaching event, and walked on the beach, and found a few geocaches in Fort Stevens Park on a warm, sunny day. A good mental health break.
