101/1001 Update
Nov. 9th, 2023 11:23 pmOne of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do. - Henry Ford
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I trained in two Qi Gong/Yang Tai Chi classes last week, and two classes so far this week. I keep polishing what I know of the Yang Staff Form.
November's GoRuck 'Listen' Challenge dropped shortly before I finished October's F*CK. *smile* The workout is, of course, the CHAD1000X, a thousand step-ups while wearing my baseline-weight ruck, "in honor of Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson who took his life on October 29, 2018 due to the effects of numerous deployments, several TBIs, blast wave injuries and PTSD. Our goal is to honor Chad’s life and legacy and to raise awareness for suicide prevention." The Rucking and Additional Challenge requirements are to, "[p]hone a friend and invite them to ruck with you. Invite at least 1 person per week to ruck with you. If they don't have a ruck then take a coupon (sandbag, kettlebell or medball) on your ruck and trade turns carrying it." The book of the month is Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. The F*CK is, "[a] 5 Miler For Time at Baseline Weight. Test at the beginning of the month and retest at the end of the month. No music, just listen to your thoughts and breath, focus on the task at hand".
My first F*CK time was 2 hours and 23 minutes, after a Tai Chi/Staff Form class. My first friend ruck was a 2-miler, with a stop for a beer flight, with my friend using their hiking backpack with some old college textbooks in it. It was great to catch up with them. Should anyone on this list want a fun ruck, please reach out. *smile* I'll be knocking out the CHAD1000X this week.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, and Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk. I've also started the Alex Fletcher series by Steven Konkoly, The Method of Zen by Eugen Herrigel, and Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I attended a two-day Trauma Symposium at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Trauma Center. This conference was not just a review of EMT skills. On Day One, we started out punching way above our weight class and practiced advanced paramedic skills, including intubation on both an adult and a pediatric mannequin, air support resources, advanced diagnostic Chain of Survival, and using pelvic binders (I'd seen them used before, but never actually set one myself) and splinting for trauma. A pelvic binder is used to reduce the volume of the pelvis and tamponade any hemorrhage, as well as provide biomechanical stabilization. Day Two was just as challenging with needle chest decompressions, Ultrasound/FAST exams, a Stop the Bleed class, and finishing off with an emergency airway cricothyrotomy on a mannequin.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: No progress.
