Despair demands less of us, it's more predictable, and in a sad way safer. Authentic hope requires clarity seeing the troubles in this world and imagination, seeing what might lie beyond these situations that are not inevitable and immutable. — Rebecca Solnit

Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing: I am on break from the weekly Shaolin Kung Fu class for the holidays.

December's GoRuck 'Live' Challenges are completed. The workout was the 'Nightmare WOD before Christmas' and is actually a 2-day workout. Day 1 was the 'Jack Skellington' WOD with a buy-in of a 1 Mile run/shuffle, then 50 Burpees, 50 Sit-Ups, 50 Push-Ups, 50 Squats, 50 4ct Mountain Climbers, 50 4ct Jumping Jacks, and 50 4ct Flutter Kicks. Day 2 was the 'Lock, Shock, and Barrel' WOD, which is 10 Man Makers, 50 Plank Ruck Pull Throughs, a 400m Ruck, 10 more Man Makers, 50 Ruck Pressed Leg Lifts, another 400m Ruck, 10 more Man Makers, 50 American Twists (2 ct), and a final 400m Ruck.

January's GoRuck 'Origin' Challenges dropped right on time. The 'Origin Strike' workout is a Buy In of a 1-mile ruck (walk or shuffle), then a 20-minute AMRAP of 5 Ruck Hand Release Push Ups, 10 Ruck Squats, and 15 Sandbag Bent Over Rows, and a Cash Out of a 400m Sandbag Suitcase Carry (switch hands as needed), wearing your ruck for the entire workout using your baseline weight. The Rucking and Additional Challenge requirement is, "Choose your weight, set your goal, and earn your Ruck Fit patch by completing 10 total rucks between January 1 – 31." I note that, at the Advanced level, a ruck should be 20-45 lbs. for 5-7 miles. The book of the month is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. The F*CK is, "50 Ruck Squats for time, [h]ip crease should go below the kneecap (just past parallel) to count."

On December 31st, I got my December retest F*CK done (Sandbag Burpees, 2 minutes max reps with sandbag at baseline weight), and I completed 11 reps - 1 more than my first F*CK at the beginning of the month. On January 1, I completed the December Day 1/'Jack Skellington' WOD with the support of some friends - and in doing so, I also completed January's initial F*CK ("50 Ruck Squats for time, [h]ip crease should go below the kneecap (just past parallel) to count") with a time of 1:19. On January 2nd, I survived the Day 2/'Lock, Shock, and Barrel' WOD by myself, completing the last of the 2025 GoRuck Tribe requirements, two days late. After yesterday's WOD, I was sore and tired - the burpees at the beginning of the Man Makers for Day 2 were tough, and were valuable training and practice in 'getting back up'.

Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: My next book in my martial arts library is Warriors of the Heart by Danaan Parry. I'm still slowly working my way through A New Mourning: Discovering the Gifts in Grief by Georgena Eggleston. I had been unexpectedly gifted Securing Sexuality: Emerging Issues at the Intersection of Intimacy and Technology by Stefani Goerlich and J. Wolfgang Goerlich, along with a wee dram of Loch Lamond 18, and I've made good progress with the former, and immensely enjoyed the latter. I've 'sat' another virtual loving-kindness metta, for my Student, my clients, and myself. May we all be at ease, may we all be free of fear and anxiety, and may we all be happy.

The Universe dropped a two-card Tarot reading in my lap - The Queen of Wands and the Four of Swords. From Astrology.com, "Overall, the Queen of Wands and Four of Swords tarot card combination suggests the importance of finding balance and taking care of oneself in the midst of intense activity or stress. It encourages the querent to listen to their own needs and desires, and to take a step back when necessary in order to achieve greater overall success and fulfillment." Hmmm.

Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: Yet another pile of mail needs to be collected at Base Station. No progress with The Whorse; she'll be ready for pickup whenever I can schedule her. I'll get her to Base Station and start her rehabilitation and restocking this winter. I've scheduled my biannual BLS for Healthcare Providers class and completed the Oregon OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens class - both required for being on a Kinkfest Medical Team.

In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm continuing Jim Cobb's Countdown to Preparedness book/assignments. Week 22 is firearms, and I still need to check, clean, and practice more with my existing gear. Week 22 is still on hold, but it's now more on my radar. I'm well-prepared for Week 42, Post-Collapse Excursions, and Week 43, Odds and Ends to Stock Up On - I have most of the necessary items, except for plywood and dimensional lumber for repairs, and coolers for temporary food storage.

Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress.

Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: I've DM'd PDX-Rated again, and I'm prepping for the 'Medical situations DM's should be looking for' class I'll be teaching at the RCDM meeting on the 8th. I'm also spending time organizing and checking credentials for the Kinkfest Medical Team, now with 25 volunteers approved on the roster.
