We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn't have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness. - Petra Nemcova

Goals Completed: 3
Goals in Progress: 22

First, we are all safe.

Yesterday, we had a severe wind and rain storm, with winds up to 70 mph. The House of a Thousand Projects lost power for about 24 hours, and all of the roads were blocked with downed trees and power lines. Emergency utility crews, fire departments, law enforcement, and tow trucks were all working overtime.

I was away doing some shopping and planning to train on what had appeared earlier to be a pretty sunny day, but the school was closed due to the then looming storm - so I headed home. I got diverted by Steph, and went to her parent's house, who kept their power except for brief flickers.

However, because of Steph's medical condition, Steph's Dad and I went in Steph's dad's truck to get Steph and her dog. We took back roads in his 4x4 truck, because the usual ways were blocked and unsafe. Steph and the dog got loaded in the truck, and I grabbed CERT and Red Cross Disaster gear - just in case I was deployed. We made it back safely, and spent the night on the couch in her parent's living room. Luckily, there were no deployments or activations.

We made it back this afternoon, and we had almost no damage at the House of a Thousand Projects. Others were not so lucky. We lost a few shingles and some flashing, and a lot of broken branches. Steph is resting and doing well. Bonus: Steph's dad reprogrammed my hand-held ham radio with most of the Portland and local frequencies.

This, perhaps, is why Disaster Preparedness training is so important. Last night could have gone very wrong, and I'm glad we have the gear and the training to keep ourselves, and others, safe when it's needed.
