101/1001 Update
Apr. 21st, 2021 05:08 pm“Seems to me that if you’re afraid or living with some big fear, you’re not really living. You’re only half alive. I don’t care if it’s the boss you’re scared of or a lot of people in a room or diving off of a dinky little board, you gotta get rid of it. You owe it to yourself. Makes sort of a zombie out of you, being afraid. I mean you want to be free, don’t you? And how can you if you are scared? That’s prison. Fear’s a jailer. Mind now, I’m not a professor on the subject. I just found it out for myself. But that’s what I think.” – Audie Murphy
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I've switched my regimen to doing 2 sets of 33 burpees, and I'm still working toward the goal of the next test being 2 x 50 burpees with a 1-minute break between sets. I'm still doing 3 x 50 pushups, but improving my form to the APFT standard.
My additional tasking for this month's GoRuck Challenge that I have chosen to take on is to pass both the APFT and The MARSOC Short Card, and to complete the Base Station RV Dump line. Today, I passed the MARSOC Short Card, which is: 30 Push-ups, 30 Air squats, 30 Crunches, 10 Burpees, 10 Windmills, 30 Push-ups, 30 Mountain climbers, 30 Flutter kicks, 10 Burpees, 10 Cherry pickers (4-count), 30 Push-ups, 30 Star Jumpers (or Jumping Jacks), 30 Back Extensions (“Supermans”), 10 Burpees, 10 Chain breakers, 30 Push-ups, 30 Lunges, 30 Hello Dollies, 10 Burpees, 10 Trunk twists, and 3 Max sets of dead-hang pull-ups or flexed-arm hangs. Uggh. I almost threw up a couple of times, but I got it done. I picked flexed-arm hangs because of the bar I was using. *smile* Next week is the APFT.
This week we will also be taking on the 12-mile ruck, probably at Fort Stephens, combining it with some geocaching.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I am continuing my mindful eating practice, and I've almost finished that goal. I'm still reading Meditations 4, by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffery Degraff), a short chapter or two at a time. I'm still rereading one of my permanent library books, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz. I have finished reading Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine by Damon Tweedy. I read all of it in one night; the well-written stories of his experiences at Duke Medical School echoed my own experiences of racial disparities and cultural bias within mental healthcare professional training in North Carolina, without my white privilege. A very unsettling, informative, and necessary read for anyone working with clients or patients of a different ethnicity.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress. Everyone in my immediate circle has been fully vaccinated.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm still doing a weekly 3-hour comprehensive EMT refresher online. This week: Medical Emergencies Overview, and next week Respiratory Emergencies. I have signed up for a full day shift at the station, and I'm still being considered for some wildland firefighter training.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: Because of the increased early fire danger, we spent some time clearing up and sorting the slash pile, reducing it by half, and making it more efficient to burn it when we are allowed to burn. We also leveled the RV dump line, getting about two-thirds backfill on about 20 feet of the line, to hold it in place while we dig more and put more dirt back in the trench. I also built the new post office box, but it needs a concrete base to put it on. We checked and charged the non-potable water system, and got started on the Pump House electrical system. Alfie knows that we are his people. *smile*
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: We are also going to take a shorter geocaching hike in the Columbia Gorge this week, probably McCall Point.
