This is the precept by which I have lived: Prepare for the worst; expect the best; and take what comes. — Hannah Arendt

Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: After our brief California road trip (see below), I picked up a non-Covid flu that delayed all of my fitness goals for a week or so. I deferred my workday routine of three sets of 30 pushups, three sets of grippers, 30 air squats, and 30 crunches on the one day I was at work last week, and I'm just starting to feel better. I trained in one Yang Style Tai Chi/Qigong class this last week, and one Yang Style Tai Chi/Qigong class this week. I did sign up for the 2023 Rugged Maniac race, at the beginning of July.

To complete the July 'Revolt' Challenge, we only needed to do the “Knowlton” Hero WOD, which is a 17 Minute AMRAP of 9 Ruck Upright Rows, 16 Ruck Swings, and 76 Paces Sandbag and Ruck Carry, with a Buy Out of a 1-Mile Heavy Ruck (as much weight as you can ruck for a mile). We did a night WOD and ruck. I used my baseline weight of 35 lbs. in my ruck, and my 60 lb. sandbag for the exercises, but I used Faye's sandbag of 25 lbs. with my baseline ruck for the 1-mile Heavy Ruck, as I'm still recovering from the flu. As all the other requirements are complete, we slapped the July patch on our rucks.

We still have March's bonus WOD and some of August, September, October, and November's Challenge tasks, as broken down below:

The August 'Peace' GoRuck WOD is the “13”, with Part 1 being a 13-minute AMRAP (13 sandbag man makers, and 13 ruck lunges) and then immediately after ruck 1 mile, and then for Part 2 at the 30 min mark (you have a time hack), another 13-min AMRAP (13 Sandbag get-ups and 13 ruck push-ups) and then immediately after ruck another mile. The additional tasking for August is to, "[t]hink about an area of your life where you are not at peace. Perhaps it’s with a relationship, your career, your fitness, or another aspect of your life. Write down three ways to attempt to obtain peace and put it on your bathroom mirror". Because I really don't have a bathroom mirror right now, my ways: (1) career - I need to redo my fee structure to make ends meet a bit more comfortably; (2) fitness - I need more structure with both strength and flexibility; and (3) relationship - more identification with feelings and less conflict. We've already completed the book and the rucking requirement, and now we have only the WOD to finish the month.

For the September 'War' Goruck Challenge, we've finished First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11 by Toby Harnden, the September book of the month. We're planning the rucking requirement of 110 flights of stairs or 2,071 steps, honoring the first responders that died at Ground Zero that day trying to climb the 110 flights of stairs, but we've deferred it until Faye's medical issues can be addressed. We also still have to do the WOD and the additional tasking, which is to "listen to a veteran on the subject of war ... you can do this in real life or by watching a talk online."

For October's "Live' GoRuck Challenge, we've also finished the book of the month, All Secure: A Special Operations Soldier's Fight to Survive on the Battlefield and the Homefront by Tom Satterly. The rucking requirement is to, "[p]ick 4 days out of this month to [r]uck one mile with heavy weight “Mog Mile” style — in honor of those who did the October 4, 1993 Mog Mile, and those who could not." This means, "Start with your baseline weight and increase 5-20lbs. for each of the 4 rucks, up to 100lbs. if you are an advanced rucker." We've done the first ruck, with a total of 45 lbs. in my ruck. We also still have to do the WOD and the additional tasking.

For November's 'Freedom' GoRuck Challenges, we've additionally finished November's book of the month, Freedom, by Sebastian Junger. We still have the WOD, the rucking requirement, and the additional tasking.

Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I've finished studying The Chinese Martial Code: The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Precepts of War by Sima Rangju, and Wu Zi on the Art of War by A. L. Sadler, from my permanent library. I'm also still reading How to Be Compassionate: a Handbook for Creating Inner Peace and a Happier World by The Dalai Lama XIV and Jeffrey Hopkins, and The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters by Sarah Susanka. I've also finished reading American Pie: Slices of Life (and Pie) from America's Back Roads by Pascale Le Draoulec. I've 'sat' virtual Zazen twice, a makeup for October and for the month of November.

Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I've completed a 6-CEU course on Ethics for Counselors, another 6-CEU course on Smoking and Secondhand Smoke, a 3.5-CEU course on Medical Marijuana and Other Cannabinoids, a 1.5-CEU course on Cultural Competence: An Overview, and a 1.5-CEU online webinar Introduction to Mental Health Assessment and Letters of Support for Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults. This completed 2022's CEU requirements for all of my licenses and certifications. I've also completed this month's Starlite CEU Series, First Responders and the Silent Epidemic of Suicide and Addiction, as an extra class of interest. I've paid for my AAA RV+ vehicle assistance renewal, and Base Station's Property Taxes. I should be ready to go on my EMT CEU classes; I'm due to recertify at the end of March.

In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress.

Base Station/Ol' Number 3: The Old Man arranged to get the Base Station HAM radio antenna back into working shape after the windstorm.

Adventure/Doing Stuff: The Old Man and I took a short road trip to California for a memorial celebration for my brother. It was good to see my remaining family and spend some time with The Old Man.
