“Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts.” — Steve Prefontaine

Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I'm up to three sets of a minimum of 30 pushups, and I'm back to three sets of grippers on work days. I have trained in three Yang Style Tai Chi/Qigong classes this previous last week (getting in a third class on a Saturday from my last entry), and three classes last week, and two classes this week so far. I've only made a little progress in the Yang 13 Palms Staff form, but I have practiced what I know of the form several times.

I still have to complete April's GoRuck 'Grit' Challenge ruck and the additional challenge, which is "this month, ruck 6 miles with your baseline weight and take a die from a board game. Right after you finish rucking 6 miles, roll the die. Whatever number it lands on, that's how many additional miles you ruck. For example, [if] you roll a 6, you will ruck a total of 12 miles that day." I did complete April's workout, the Sandbag D.T. Tough, which was a Buy-In of 20 Sandbag Thrusters, 5 rounds of 12 Sandbag Deadlifts, 9 Sandbag Hang Cleans, and 6 Sandbag Shoulder to Overheads, and then a different 200m Sandbag Carry after each round (Overhead, Suitcase, Back Rack, Bear Hug, and Zercher), and then finally, a Cash-Out of 20 more Sandbag Thrusters, all with the 60-lb. sandbag. I'm partway through reading Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD.

I'm also working on May's 'Loss' Challenge tasks. Although I still have the May workout (The Murph), I have watched the film Restrepo by Sebastian Junger, a documentary of an Army outpost during combat in Afghanistan. I have also completed the rucking requirement, which was, "the same as the Function Check: a 1-mile ruck, shuffle or run for time." I solo rucked/shuffled a mile in 14:02 with my 20-lb. plate carrier. May's Additional Challenge is, after completing the May Function Check, to take your mile time and divide it by 8 to determine your 200m pace. [My pace = 1:45], and using the same weight (20-lb. plate carrier) used for the function check, completing each week’s goal in one session:

Week 1 run/shuffle: 10 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 10 seconds [1:35]
Week 2 run/shuffle: 8 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 15 sec [1:30]
Week 3 run/shuffle: 6 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 20 sec [1:25]
Week 4 run/shuffle: 4 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 25 sec [1:20]

I am significantly faster than my time in January of 24 minutes, but that was with a 35-lb. ruck and a 60-lb. sandbag, and no running/shuffling. 14:02 is still pretty slow, even with a plate carrier. This Additional Challenge task should work on my speed. Week 1 was fairly tough; I kept to the standard, but I was close to 1:35 most of the mid-intervals. My best times were my first and last intervals, 1:22 and 1:24. Week 2 was slightly tougher, still to the standard; my best times were 1:16 for three of the eight intervals.

Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk, and Kodo: Ancient Ways: Lessons in the Spiritual Life of the Warrior/Martial Artist by Kensho Furuya.

Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I've finished the shoeshine box to hold all of my shoe/boot maintenance supplies, and it's stronger than it was originally and stained a dark chocolate reddish brown. I'm on a waitlist for a minor broken tooth that will need repair, soon.

In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress.

Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. I'm still in the process of relocating to Base Station. We spent a weekend trimming back the grass and weeds and digging out a minor landslide that made emptying out the grey and blackwater tanks more difficult. We also installed and loaded the industrial shelves in the Pump House, including the wallboard covering the insulation behind the shelves and the tool cabinet. There are still some areas of the walls that need some wallboard to finish the project. but there is a lot more functional space. A permit for the septic plan is still in progress, as we're waiting for the geoengineering consult/site plan for gravel and concrete for the large vehicle bay and the pole barn. The geoengineer still has not sent his findings. The 2-inch Trash Pump and the wheel kit are still in the Pump House, ready to be assembled and tested. The curtain project for Ol' Number 3 is still in the bus but not installed.

Adventure/Doing Stuff: No progress.
