101/1001 Update
May. 23rd, 2023 05:23 pm“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.” ― Charles Bukowski
Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I'm holding at three sets of a minimum of 30 pushups, and three sets of grippers on work days. I have trained in three Yang Style Tai Chi/Qigong classes this past week, and two classes this week. I've practiced, but made no progress in the Yang 13 Palms Staff form.
I've finished May's 'Loss' Challenge tasks. I completed the May workout (The Murph), which is rucking one mile, 100 (60-lb.) Sandbag Bent Over Rows, 200, push-ups, 300 bodyweight squats, and then ruck another mile, all while wearing my 20-lb. plate carrier, except for the 1-mile rucks, where I wore my 35-lb. ruck. I also finished May's Additional Challenge, using the same weight (20-lb. plate carrier) used for the function check, to complete each week’s run/shuffle goal in one session:
Week 3 run/shuffle: 6 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 20 sec [1:25]
Week 4 run/shuffle: 4 x 200m intervals at your 200m pace minus 25 sec [1:20]
Week 3 was also tough, but I was already thinking and training for Week 4. The first two intervals were 1:07, as I pushed a bit harder, and the rest were well within the standard, In the last interval, I went all-out, with a time off 0:58. Week 4 I strived for a consistent pace, and completed all four intervals between 1:08 and 1:10.
I still have to complete April's GoRuck 'Grit' Challenge ruck and the additional challenge, which is "this month, ruck 6 miles with your baseline weight and take a die from a board game. Right after you finish rucking 6 miles, roll the die. Whatever number it lands on, that's how many additional miles you ruck. For example, [if] you roll a 6, you will ruck a total of 12 miles that day." I have finished reading Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD, and I'm making some lifestyle changes to sleep, nutrition, and exercise.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk, and Kodo: Ancient Ways: Lessons in the Spiritual Life of the Warrior/Martial Artist by Kensho Furuya.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I'm still on a waitlist for a minor broken tooth that will need repair, soon. I attended another online workshop with Deborah "Kink Shrink" Fields, a UK Psychotherapist, on the topic of Basic BDSM safety skills.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress. I spent a day training in a Wildland Firefighting Exercise near Lyons Creek, with our station and several other departments and districts. I was assigned to Heavy Brush 481, and once we'd set up our progressive hose lays, I ran a defensive line to protect the apparatus and be a lookout for the other crews setting up and protecting exposures. I also spent some time on an aggressive hose line, and cutting a minimal firebreak with only a few people (called a 'scratch line'). The different departments worked well with each other, and once we got back and returned all of the apparatus to service, I had gotten all of my annual Wildland Firefighter Type 2 skills practiced.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. I'm still in the process of relocating to Base Station. There are still some areas of the walls that need some wallboard to finish the Pump House, but there is a lot more functional space. A permit for the septic plan is still in progress, as we're waiting for the geoengineering consult/site plan for gravel and concrete for the large vehicle bay and the pole barn. The geoengineer still has not sent his findings, but has sent a proposal. The 2-inch Trash Pump and the wheel kit are still in the Pump House, ready to be assembled and tested. The curtain project for Ol' Number 3 is still in the bus but not installed.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: No progress. This weekend is SOAK. I'll be helping train the fire crews with hose management and deployment, and working a 12-hour overnight shift, and running one of the hose teams for both of the Burns during the event. Although I still have significant concerns about the leadership and management of the Fire Safety Department, I'll do my best to keep myself, my crew, and the event safe.
