101/1001 Update
Jan. 28th, 2026 11:41 pmEvery day more of our life is used up and less and less of it is left. - Marcus Aurelius
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing: I've finally gotten back to some sustained physical exercise, and I've attended one class of the weekly Shaolin Kung Fu training. I was gone so long, I missed the rest of the nunchaku training, and now we're starting the Dragon Animal-style training.
January's GoRuck 'Origin' Challenges are ongoing, but still little progress. The 'Origin Strike' workout is a Buy In of a 1-mile ruck (walk or shuffle), then a 20-minute AMRAP of 5 Ruck Hand Release Push Ups, 10 Ruck Squats, and 15 Sandbag Bent Over Rows, and a Cash Out of a 400m Sandbag Suitcase Carry (switch hands as needed), wearing your ruck for the entire workout using your baseline weight. The Rucking and Additional Challenge requirement is, "Choose your weight, set your goal, and earn your Ruck Fit patch by completing 10 total rucks between January 1 – 31." I note that, at the Advanced level, a ruck should be 20-45 lbs. for 5-7 miles. The book of the month is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. The retest F*CK is, "50 Ruck Squats for time, [h]ip crease should go below the kneecap (just past parallel) to count."
During Week 3, I'm more than halfway through Meditations, and I've planned rucks, the repeat F*CK, and the workout for this week, when I have more lung capacity. I completed a test ruck (baseline weight, 5 miles), but I was slow, needed a break every half mile, and coughed a lot. I completed a second 5-miler the next day with a friend - I was coughing less, but still needed a lot of short breaks. Because I was so sick, I've reset the Ruck Fit Challenge to extend into February, but I will earn the patch. Eight more 5-milers to go!
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still slowly working my way through A New Mourning: Discovering the Gifts in Grief by Georgena Eggleston. I've keeping up up for my third online college course, from King's College London, SSPP_TPx2:Major Dilemmas in Counterterrorism, where I will, "[e]xplore the global challenges of counterterrorism in the 21st century. Analyse definitions, causes, law, ethics, and strategy, and assess what effective, legitimate responses look like for democratic societies." I've completed Unit 2, learning about different causes and ideology. I've also virtually 'sat' metta once again, with a new teacher - Bansho will be in Japan for three months. I have also attended yet another online kink class, Spanking (Or How I Learned To Love Daddy's Belt) with Daddy Rod, hosted by Portland Leather Alliance; a fairly basic technique/demo class.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress. I'm preparing my books for my CPA. I'll be renewing my BPLS cert this week.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm continuing Jim Cobb's Countdown to Preparedness book/assignments. Week 22 is firearms, and I still need to check, clean, and practice more with my existing gear. Week 22 is still on hold, but it's now more on my radar. I'm in okay shape for Week 46, Temporary/Alternative Shelters. I'm signed up for a wound care class and an in-person Older Adults Go-Bag inventory preparation in February, both of which are part of the Washington County MRC.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress.
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: I'm preparing for the class I'll be teaching at the RCDM meeting, 'Medical situations for DM's'. I'm also still spending time organizing and checking credentials for the Kinkfest Medical Team, now with 30 volunteers approved on the list, and more coming slowly as they are processed through Volunteer Registration. I've also ordered and received the guide maps and the PCT data book I'll need to plan my PCT hikes, but there's no time to focus on them until probably after Kinkfest.
