Weekend Update

grim23This weekend I flew to San Francisco, dropping off the HD on the way, to teach a martial arts protocol class - not techniques, but more about the benefits of a martial arts way. Martial arts protocols that teach ways to resolve conflict calmly and compassionately, reduce distractions that interfere with service, develop character, increase communication and learning skills, and help teach a spiritual perspective were discussed. I gave gifts of chopsticks, and received a beautiful fan and origami crane. I was the Second Honored Guest at a Japanese Tea Ceremony, and helped during a wonderful Aikido demonstration. I gave a Mayan Warrior that had been long on my altar, and received the gift of ritual with a deshi that I formally met for the first time. I lent my hakama to my sister, a warrior in her own right, and it was properly folded and returned. During that honor, I unknowingly gave back to her a symbol of her stolen rank. I listened and learned from my deshi about laughter and less formality, and yet intentional ritual. I ran hills, and ate luxuries. I spoke to another deshi, far away, about a leap of faith. I grieved the loss of a wonderful cat of a former person I had a service connection with. I spent a few hours with two ever-helpful Presidents of the BIMC, and I owe them a good beer. I made many new friends and increased my network of both knowledge and connection.
