Goals /LIfe Update
Jul. 7th, 2010 10:37 pmHaving just posted a training philosophy, I may as well update how my training goals are going. I have been training my staff form in the dojang at odd hours of the day or night (#12), and I'm still mishandling or striking ineffectively enough with the bo to generate about 100 pushups a day (#5). The heavy staff has not become second nature to me yet, and my muscles remind me that I'm still alive. This goal will be complete when I can easily and effectively manage all three staff forms for my level. I'm still also in the dojang for regular training, as well. I'm sleeping well (#97) and changing my eating habits progressively (#26).
I've re-read Funakoshi's Karate-do: My Way of Life (#28). Funakoshi-sama, the father of modern-day Karate-do is a very thoughtful and enjoyable read for any practitioner of the hard arts. Funikoshi-sama's book lists six points, of which number 3 is simply missing. The points are: (1) be deadly serious in training; (2) train with both heart and soul and without worrying about theory; (4) avoid self-deceit and dogmatism; (5) try to see yourself as you truly are and try to adapt what is meritorious in the work of others; and (6) abide by the rules of ethics in your daily life, whether in public or in private.
