Yesterday, at the end of two classes in my dojang, I was ordered to complete the Kyok Pa (board breaking) portion of my rank test. I did not think myself to be yet prepared for this, but I stepped forward, witnessed by about 20 students, including five dan members. The technique I was told to use to break one of the boards was a spinning back kick, the strike I practice the most because I struggle with that strike consistently. I sized the board up, noticing it was going to be a difficult break because it was one of the remaining boards from the parade that had not been broken. I breathed. On my second practice, before I had even formally requested to break my first board, I found the rhythm, and snapped all the boards almost effortlessly.

Some days, just doing the simplest technique is a struggle. Sometimes, we struggle over and over in the practice of what we do - until that moment when we find that rhythm. Then, what was difficult becomes easier. That's the payoff for all of the hard work and the struggle. Then, it's time to add to that until we're struggling again. That's called training. The key is to keep doing this, over and over, fearlessly. Nothing is Impossible.
