Today I finished the Firefighter Academy (#67), completing all of the classes and evolutions to become a Wildland Firefighter 2. I still have a few things to make up, and I’m not fire-tested, but I have completed the Academy. Today for the final evolution, I was handed the radio and promoted to Squad Leader for the simulated fire. Our squad cut a fire line to flank an aggressive head of the fire, cutting brush and a berm in a hillside for a cup trench to meet another Squad and save a structure, and then we tactically withdrew when the simulated fire and weather conditions worsened. I got the job done, and nobody was hurt or had to deploy their fire shelters. It was a good day, and good training. I suspect I’ll need it.
