“Only as a warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge, and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges.” – Carlos Castaneda

Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: This week we completed the 12-mile ruck, doing most of the whole Fort Stephens State Park Trail, combining it with some geocaching. I also took on the APFT this week, which is three events consisting of the push-up, sit-up, and a two-mile run, ranging from 0 to 100 points in each event. A minimum score of 60 in each event was required to pass the test. For my age range (age 52-56) I completed 63 pushups (100 + 7 points, max score), 63 situps (score of 97), but my 2-mile run took me 24:17 (fail). To pass, I would have had to have run it in 19:48 or less. I'm doing well with bodyweight exercises, but my lack of training with running (my last run was the Rugged Maniac 10 months ago) hurt me.

After the 12-mile ruck, all I had left to complete this month's GoRuck Endure Challenge is the additional tasking, of "Dream up something big, something you have at least a 50% chance of failing. Write it down somewhere you’ll be reminded of it often. Do something symbolic to take the first step down that path, then endure it as long as you can." My additional tasking was attempting to pass the MARSOC Short Card, which I passed, the APFT, which I passed two events but failed the third, for an overall failing score, and to complete the Base Station RV Dump line by the end of the month, which I failed. *wry smile* About 50%. That finishes my GoRuck 'Endure' Challenge, and I've slapped the patch on my ruck. I will keep working on the APFT and the RV Dump line.

I'm still doing 2 sets of 33 burpees, and I'm still working toward the goal of the next self-test of 2 x 50 burpees with a 1-minute break between sets, and then 100 consecutive burpees. I'm still doing 3 x 50 pushups to the APFT standard, working on the goal of 100 pushups.

Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I've almost finished my mindful eating practice goal. I'm still reading Meditations 4, by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffery Degraff), a short chapter or two at a time. I'm still rereading one of my permanent library books, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz.

Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress. Burning Man just canceled for 2021, so some of my stuff in this category has been deferred.

In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm still doing a weekly 3-hour comprehensive EMT refresher online. This week: Respiratory Emergencies. I have signed up for a full day shift at the station, and I got the training slot for a double two-day Wildland Firefighter training.

Base Station/Ol' Number 3: Unfortunately, I have failed to finish the RV dump line by the end of the month due to other priorities, a Firefighter shift, and the two-day Wildland Firefighter training this upcoming weekend. A good attempt was made, and the RV Dump line is stable in the ground for the first 30 feet - pretty good progress. Because of the continuing high level of fire danger, we focused on eliminating the loose slash pile on a permitted burn day instead of spending the day digging the trench, and we cleared more of the 'living room'/party/visitor/sitting space. I also assembled a covered firewood rack while we were burning. We have only one well-contained slash pile left, with a much lower fire threat. We also added some gravel to high-use areas, dug out a deeper space for the portable RV dump tank to make draining easier, and I added some dirt to the RV drain pipe to secure that in the ground as well.

Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: We spent Earth Day hiking the McCall Point/Rowena Crest Viewpoint Trail, a 3.5-mile moderate hike in the Columbia Gorge this week, and performed a rescue mission/cache maintenance on one of the older remaining geocaches in Oregon (hidden in April 2002) while we were there. A gorgeous, windy, wildflower-filled hike - and, as we do, we did some CITO (Cache In, Trash Out) and hauled out a bag of other people's trash when we left. On the way home, we found a nightcache that I'd DNF'd before. A great Earth Day!
