101/1001 Update
May. 1st, 2021 10:10 pm“Bravery is being the only one who knows you’re afraid.” - Franklin P. Jones
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: This month's GoRuck 'Honor' Challenge has dropped. Our workout is the 'Murph' WOD, in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan June 28, 2005. A U.S. Navy SEAL officer, Murphy was awarded the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the War in Afghanistan. The 'Murph' consists of a 1-Mile Ruck, 100 Pull-Ups, 200 Push-Ups, 300 Squats, and then another 1-Mile Ruck, all with a 20-lb ruck. I will be using an approved modification of Bent-over sandbag (60lb.) rows as a substitute for pull-ups. This month's rucking requirement is to ruck 15 consecutive days with 2+ miles rucking/day. If you miss a day, you must make it up with a 10-mile ruck. The additional tasking this month is to "reach out to and connect with one person you admire greatly, and tell them why." Finally, we're to read Ashley's War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. We've already started on our 15 days rucking.
I'm still doing 2 sets of 33 burpees, and I'm working close to 3 sets. I'm still working toward the goal of the next self-test of 2 x 50 burpees with a 1-minute break between sets, and then 100 consecutive burpees. I'm also still doing 3 x 50 pushups to the APFT standard, working on the goal of 100 pushups. I've got to keep up on the APFT.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'll finish my mindful eating practice goal this week. I'm still reading Meditations 4, by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffery Degraff), a short chapter or two at a time, "the book that never ends". I'm still rereading one of my permanent library books, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I'm still doing the weekly 3-hour comprehensive EMT refresher series online - but for the whole month of May, it's three, 3-hour classes. This week: Neurological Emergencies, Endocrine and Hematological Emergencies, and Psychiatric/Behavioral Emergencies. I finally got a day-only Firefighter shift, after the station had been closed to volunteers for COVID-19 cautions for months. There were no fires and no patients during my shift, so I spent the day maintaining our memorial garden, and then getting in a good workout (2x50 pushups, and 2x33 burpees with a quarter-mile lap between and after the sets). After lunch, we knocked out the house chores, then I got to observe and help during a technical rope rescue familiarization. I also had the rare opportunity to unroll, inspect, and red tag (take out of service) one of the 5-inch supply/attack lines from Engine 481, which gave me three sign-offs on my Firefighter taskbook. Unfortunately, my Wildland Firefighter training was canceled, as Columbia County moves back to Extreme Risk. *sigh*
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. The RV dump line, eliminating more of slash pile on a permitted burn day and clearing more of the 'living room'/party/visitor/sitting space, and getting the Pump House ready for the electrician are my priorities. We're also ordering antenna parts to get going on raising the HAM antenna.
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: As I suddenly had a day off, Faye and I hiked Catherine Creek in the Columbia Gorge, to finally clean out that whole area of unfound geocaches. It's taken five years to get them all, but we've made good progress on the Columbia Gorge Geocaching/Hiking Challenge. Today's hike was sunny, but very windy for our 6-mile moderate/difficult hike. Great views and lots of wildflowers, and we even saw a very close pair of Ospreys. Next time: Bridal Veil or Coyote Wall. *smile*
