101/1001 Update; End of 2023
Dec. 31st, 2023 02:41 pmOne of the signs of maturity is a healthy respect for reality—a respect that manifests itself in the level of one’s aspirations and in the accuracy of one’s assessment of the difficulties which separate the facts of today from the bright hopes of tomorrow. — Robert H. Davies
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I trained in four (including last week's makeup) Qi Gong/Yang Tai Chi classes this last week, despite the Christmas holidays, and three classes this week (including the Last Class of the Year), despite New Year's holidays. I continue practicing improvements and clarifications with the Yang Staff Form, and I've made a little progress.
December's GoRuck 'Explore' challenge tasks are completed. I completed the workout, which was the 'GoRuck's 12 Days of Christmas', which was, "[s]tart with one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Next do two Thrusters and one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Then three Sandbag Clean & Presses, two Thrusters, and one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Continue this way until the final round of 12 Sandbag Man Makers, 11 Sandbag Front Tosses, and each movement descending in repetitions all the way down to the one 100m SB Shuffle for 364 total repetitions." I've watched December's film, Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón. The F*CK, an All Fours Belly Lift, was also completed.
January's GoRuck 'Create' challenges have not yet dropped, but I know that the rucking/additional challenge requirements will be to ruck outside for 45 minutes daily and to do 75 pushups, also daily.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, and Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk. I've also started the Alex Fletcher series by Steven Konkoly, The Method of Zen by Eugen Herrigel, and Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. I 'sat' another virtual loving-kindness metta. I will engage in a (makeup for 2023) 7-day fast in early January.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: No progress.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress. I worked a 24-hour (closer to 27) shift at the station on Medic 481, starting on Christmas Eve and going over to Christmas morning. I got some good practice on a bunch of different complex calls, including helping set 12-leads, capillary blood glucose (CBG) testing, and driving Medic 481, Code 1.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. We've started the cleanup process of getting rid of junk, and letting some of the mud from the logging settle before we regravel the driveway. The black water tanks were emptied, and the trailer was repositioned to still be useful but out of the way for the septic trenching.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: We saw a performance of Christmas With C.S. Lewis at the Newmark Theater.
