101/1001 Update
Jan. 15th, 2024 12:23 pm"I believe that there is a clarity and peace that can only be achieved through long and grueling endurance work. For me, this space is no longer filled with longing for a better life or wishing for a future that I don’t really believe exists for me. Instead, it serves as a time for reflection and gratitude for all that I have accomplished and the gifts that sobriety has given me. These ‘long walks’ serve as a reminder that the answers, almost always, are found in hard work." - Chad Belger
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I trained in two Qi Gong/Yang Tai Chi classes and one Shaolin Kung-Fu class this last week. I practiced less with the Yang Staff Form, and I've made only a little progress, but I have also started learning a Shaolin sword form.
January's GoRuck 'Create' challenges are ongoing. The rucking/additional challenge requirements are to ruck outside for 45 minutes daily and the workout is 75 pushups daily. I'm 115 pages into the book of the month, The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. The F*CK is 75 pushups, for time. I'd managed to keep up with the daily ruck and pushups, as of Day 13 - but Day 13's Snowpocalypse meant no ruck happened. I did get a ruck and my pushups done today, and a late-night makeup ruck to get back to the current completion of the daily requirements on Day 14.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, and Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk. I've also started the Alex Fletcher series by Steven Konkoly, The Method of Zen by Eugen Herrigel, and Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki. I finished rereading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig, and I've also read Something Good for a Change: Random Notes on Peace Thru Living by Wavy Gravy.
I started a (makeup for 2023) 7-day fast on January 4th and completed it on January 10th. I consumed about three 64-oz. bottles of fruit juice, lost 6-7 lbs., and detoxed my body. I feel cleaner and lighter.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I attended an online 1.5 CEU class on Fentanyl in Focus: Perspectives on Polysubstance Use.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress. The weather brought wind, rain, and snow storms this week. We didn't lose heat and power. I have a full pantry of food, medical supplies, medications, emergency lighting, and plenty of warm clothes and bedding. I've also loaded my extra Firefighter/EMT gear, and my station bedding, into the Daily Driver in case of a callout. We have, so far, only had one frozen pipe that we were able to recover a day later. I'm supposed to be in Eugene on Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-day EMT training, but the weather isn't looking promising.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: We've got a couple of inches of snow on the ground. We've got 10 yards of gravel coming soon. Septic trenching should also be happening soon.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: No progress. We were going to see Dinosaur Jr., but we decided to stay off the roads during the early Snowpocalyse.
