Firefighter Intern: Day 26 and 27

We started out today doing house chores and replacing my dusty gear back to where it belongs. At 10:30am we started our Firefighter Fitness regimen, and halfway through the 4th of 5 laps around the PUD - we were toned out for a structure fire.
I usually sit behind the Operator/Engineer, so that I can get out and take the hydrant, but this time I was behind the Officer, so that meant I was first attack on the nozzle. It turned out to be a kitchen fire that the owner had already put out with a dry-chem extinguisher, but we ventilated the house, removed the stove to outside, and searched for a fire in the walls. Then we reloaded the engine with our 5-inch supply line that we'd dropped by the nearby hydrant as we pulled up in case we needed more water than Engine 481 holds.
Because we now have a new Paramedic Intern, and another volunteer getting his stipend for being here, we were out of beds at the main station - so I'll be sleeping on a crew bed at the Quincy substation tonight, taking Utility 482 and my turnouts. Fortunately, another volunteer will also be at the substation - and he likes to cook. *smile*
Back at the main station, where we met for a short briefing before we went to participate and observe both a lockdown drill and a fire drill at the local middle/high school. Then, house chores - I went in U482 to the local store and got eight cases of drinking water to distribute to our apparatus. After lunch, we went out and performed hydrant maintenance, opening all the ports and putting on an anti-seize compound and flowing water to clear out the rust and dirt out of the lines. I got a lot of practice with the hydrant wrench and learned some new techniques and better ways to open a hydrant faster and more efficiently.
No calls for Engine 481 ... so I slept hard and uninterrupted. *smile*
