101/1001 Update
May. 21st, 2022 08:29 pmReal Heroes are men who fall and fail and are flawed, but win out in the end because they’ve stayed true to their ideals and beliefs and commitments. – Kevin Costner
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I'm moving to less of a daily regimen of 200 pushups, taking a day off periodically to rest my shoulder and biceps. I'm still, on workdays, doing 200 pushups with an extra set of max reps with the pushup bars, and two sets of 25 forearm grippers. I've trained in one Qigong/Tai Chi class last week to make up for last week, and one this week, staying masked. I'm losing training days to do other things this week.
There's still been very little progress on last month's or this month's GoRuck Challenge. We still have April's WOD and the book, and March's bonus WOD, to complete. I have started the book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor. No progress on May's GoRuck 'Reverence' Challenge.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I've started The Chinese Martial Code: The Art of War of Sun Tzu, The Precepts of War by Sima Rangju, Wu Zi on the Art of War by A. L. Sadler. I'm keeping up my daily meditation practice for May.
New words: Nonpareil means "having no equal." Juvenescence is defined as “the state of being youthful or of growing young.” A simulacrum is a "superficial likeness or representation of something". An imprimatur is an official approval. Lastly, Funambulism means "tightrope walking", and that sense led to people applying the word to "a show of mental agility." My funambulism with my goal of learning 50 new words is now complete.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I have completed my follow-up physical appointment this week, and I've lost six pounds, although my labs are still showing higher cholesterol levels and a prediabetic condition. Even better eating, and maybe less, are in my future. Off-road lighting on the daily driver has been rescheduled for next week.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I have completed two more classes of the Community Health Paramedicine course, MIH Pharmacology, and MIH Immunizations and Course Wrap-Up. The rescheduled course, MIH Hospice Patients, is all that's left of the course.
I spent a full day of Wildland Urban Interface training this week. As what happens during a serious multi-department wildland fire, roles and responsibilities shift frequently. I started out as a firefighter on Heavy Brush 481, to being reassigned once we were at the fire location to relocate to the nearest pond/lake to draft water for other water tenders and engine pumpers. Once that was set up, I was reassigned to Medic 482, transported back to the fire location, and quickly put to work on a handline crew digging a fire break to contain a rapidly moving fire header and create an LCS/escape route. Then, once that was contained, I was assigned to another crew to dig another handline to protect water hoses, and then reassigned again to a hose line to spray water to saturate the ground and further protect the hose lines, necessary to stop and control the fire from accessing a barn and outbuildings. Then I was reassigned to help take down HB481 drafting operations, return to the station, and wash and hang the hoses we used. I earned four sign-offs in my NPFA Task Book and demonstrated proficiency in all of the skills I needed to keep my Wildland Firefighter Type II certification.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: I'm still working on the septic system plan. Faye trimmed a lot of brush and grass, I dumped the black and greywater tanks in the RV, and we pressure washed all of the daily driver vehicles and some of Ol' Number 3. We'll be spending a lot of time out there this summer.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: SOAK, the Regional Burning Man for the Portland area, is this upcoming week.
