“True grit is making a decision and standing by it, doing what must be done. No moral man can have peace of mind if he leaves undone what he knows he should have done.” – John Wayne

Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I'm adding to my daily routine, with three sets of a minimum of 30 pushups, and I'm back to three sets of grippers on work days. I can make a tight fist, although there is some swelling with bag work. I have trained in only one Yang Style Tai Chi/Qigong class this last week, and only two classes so far this week. Due to some 2-day non-COVID bug I picked up last week, and Safety NW (see below), I've only made a little progress in the Yang 13 Palms Staff form.

Because of my temporary illness, we've had to reschedule April's GoRuck 'Grit' Challenge ruck and additional challenge, which is "this month, ruck 6 miles with your baseline weight and take a die from a board game. Right after you finish rucking 6 miles, roll the die. Whatever number it lands on, that's how many additional miles you ruck. For example, [if] you roll a 6, you will ruck a total of 12 miles that day." April's GoRuck 'Grit' Challenge Tasks are the above-mentioned ruck, a challenging sandbag workout, and reading Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD. May's 'Loss' Challenge tasks have also dropped; I have not started on them. I have, however, knocked out March's and April's F*CKs, and I've started on the 400-page-plus book.

Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk, and Kodo: Ancient Ways: Lessons in the Spiritual Life of the Warrior/Martial Artist by Kensho Furuya. I did read, though, The Old Crow Book Club by Matt Love, which is about creating an impromptu book club among the homeless population in Portland. A fascinating, current, and very real story, distributed almost exclusively in street libraries around Oregon where I found my copy, and where it'll go back.

Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I've continued to work on a small woodworking project to fix a broken shoeshine box to hold all of my shoe/boot maintenance supplies. It's fixed and holding all of my supplies, but it could use some sanding and staining, and I've picked up the necessary supplies. I've also grabbed some sand, for a second sandbag, and now I have a 30-lb. small sandbag for extra training. I've completed a small project covering my office door with something better than sound-dampening foam. I've updated my Real ID with the DMV, and I've gotten my dental check-up. As it turns out, I have a broken tooth that will need repair, and that will be scheduled next week. I've also completed a 1.5 CEU online course, It’s Not Just About Fentanyl: Dealing with Multiple Addictions, just to keep current.

In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress.

Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. I'm still in the process of relocating to Base Station. A permit for the septic plan is still in progress, as we're waiting for the geoengineering consult/site plan for gravel and concrete for the large vehicle bay and the pole barn. The geoengineer still has not sent his findings, but the report "should be here by the end of the week." The industrial shelves and all of the shelving hardware are still in the Pump House and ready to be installed and loaded. I'm still waiting for a nicer day to empty the old shelves and install the better shelving. The 2-inch Trash Pump and the wheel kit, are also still in the Pump House, ready to be assembled and tested. The curtain project for Ol' Number 3 is still in the bus but not installed, but the end cabinet for the tool cabinet in the Pump House and installed, and is already full of tools, which emptied most of an old shelf.

Adventure/Doing Stuff: This last weekend I went to Safety NW, the training/ICS practice weekend for SOAK. I helped with the instruction of the fire safety crew. I have decided to go to SOAK; we have some leadership and management changes, as well as some staff and Lead shortages, that have me fairly concerned about our IC response. I'll work a 12-hour overnight shift, where we are the least staffed, and I will work both of the Burns, leading an attack line.
