101/1001 Update
Dec. 18th, 2023 02:41 pmYou must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others—something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it. — Albert Schweitzer
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I trained in two Qi Gong/Yang Tai Chi classes this previous two weeks, and another middle-path, animal-style Kung Fu class. I snuck in two classes this last week, as I was full-time at Base Station most of this last week, and made up my third Tai Chi class this week. I continue practicing and I'm making small improvements and progress with the Yang Staff Form.
December's GoRuck 'Explore' challenge tasks are ongoing. The workout is the 'GoRuck's 12 Days of Christmas,' which is, "[s]tart with one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Next do two Thrusters and one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Then three Sandbag Clean & Presses, two Thrusters, and one 100m Sandbag Shuffle. Continue this way until the final round of 12 Sandbag Man Makers, 11 Sandbag Front Tosses, and each movement descending in repetitions all the way down to the one 100m SB Shuffle for 364 total repetitions." December's film is Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón. The F*CK is an All Four Belly Lift Walk strength and flexibility exercise. The rucking requirement and additional challenge to, "[r]uck any distance with someone you love," is completed.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I'm still reading Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, and Your Brain on Food: How Chemicals Control Your Thoughts and Feelings by Gary L. Wenk. I've also started the Alex Fletcher series by Steven Konkoly, The Method of Zen by Eugen Herrigel, and Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice by Shunryu Suzuki. Is it possible to add yet one more book to the stack? I've also added Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. My book stack has gotten out of control. *grin* I have, however, finished The Unfettered Mind: Writings from a Zen Master to a Master Swordsman by Takuan Soho, translated by William Scott Wilson.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I got my yearly physical completed. My cholesterol is down, and everything else was good, but my triglycerides are still high. I will monitor this more closely; a better diet was recommended. I completed two 1-CEU online trainings, Getting Sick of Their Sick: How to Cope with Compassion Fatigue, and Physiologically Difficult Airway Management, while I was at Base Station.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: No progress.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: I've moved some of the smaller stuff out of the way for the tree removal that happened this last week, and some of the vehicles. This week I was living in Ol' Number 3 at Base Station while the loggers were removing many problematic trees, in preparation for Winter and for building the Shop in the Spring. The logging crew has turned all of the logs into 16-inch firewood - I'll have about 10 cords of wood once I've split and stacked it. A big tree had limb-damaged part of the dog-run fence two days before the loggers showed up - but the fence had to be taken down, anyway, to allow the loggers access, and it's now back up and repaired. This has also let us move the non-potable water tank and pump to a more useful place and has allowed a lot of little projects to move forward.
Adventure/Doing Stuff: No progress. I did spend an enjoyable evening with The Old Man and some of his social circle, over a beer and some tacos, and an early Christmas Dinner at the Senior Center, also with The Old Man.
