101/1001 Update
Apr. 30th, 2025 11:50 pmYou have to want it, you have to plan for it, you have to fit it into a busy day, you have to be mentally tough, you have to use others to help you. The hard part isn't getting your body in shape. The hard part is getting your mind in shape. - Amby Burfoot
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing: No progress. I missed the last two weeks, but I was there this week. I will leave this weekend for the Bloomsday 12k.
April's GoRuck Tribe 'Laughter' Challenges were completed, with 56 minutes left in the month. I completed the Rucking and Additional Challenge, which was to "Strap on your ruck and turn on a hilarious podcast or favorite comedian stand-up. The first time you laugh, drop into a squat like you just heard your name in gym class. Every time after that, add one more squat". I laughed and squatted 11 times (66 squats, 3+ miles, Sam Kinison). I also have completed the F*CK, which was 2 minutes of Ruck Swings (56 swings), and the Warrior Poet requirement this month, which was to watch Ronny Chieng: Love to Hate It. I had to borrow Nay's Netflix account; I didn't find Ronny that funny.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I did finish reading Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals, by Robert M. Pirsig, on the plane to Saguaro Man. On the plane ride home, I bought and got halfway through one of Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads, On Mental Toughness (with bonus interview "Post-Traumatic Growth and Building Resilience" with Martin Seligman).
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I've continued Jim Cobb's Countdown to Preparedness book/assignments. This week (week 16) is human waste disposal, and I am, relatively, in good shape. I have a camp toilet and extra supplies, including toilet paper and hand sanitizer, in case we lose water. The bigger airway management bag awaits me, and filling it with some extra supplies will give me some extra space, but I haven't been home enough to complete that task.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I have followed up with the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Oregon (SERV-OR) Multnomah County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteer coordinator that I have been rather busy, and haven't had time to complete the online training I will need to complete within the next three months to get onboarded. I will get this done. I have also started completing online mental health CEU classes this month. I will also get this done, but I have until October. The Whorse will, finally, get her re-refurbished transmission back either this week or next week, and be ready for a test drive and resupply - hopefully, she'll go to Burning Man this year.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: No progress. Excavation will likely start in two weeks. I will need to finish clearing the area before then.
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: I went to Arizona for Saguaro Man, walked three Ranger shifts, and completed my yearly in-person Ranger and Green Dot (mental health de-escalation) training. We tried to get to two of the oldest 100 geocaches remaining in the world, but nature/terrain, time, and a building development foiled my plans. We were close, but not able to get to ground zero for both geocaches. We did, however, visit two museums. The first was the Titan Missile Museum, a well-preserved and the last of the 54 Titan II missile sites that were on alert across the United States from 1963 to 1987. I got to be the Launch Commander for the tour, turning the key for a simulated retaliatory nuclear strike, using the same equipment used during the Cold War. It was a National Historic Landmark, but no Junior Missileer badges were available. We also visited the Pima Air and Space Museum, and saw two previous Air Force One aircraft, Freedom One (serving in the return of the American hostages from Tehran, Iran in 1981), a SR-71 (I've now seen two of the three publicly available for viewing), a fully restored B-17 Flying Fortress, and a variety of different historical military and civilian aircraft.
