grim23Wednesday, to my surprise, both during the bow-out, and as I was leaving the dojang, Master Hansley called the dojang to bow to me as a Sun Beh (senior Gup member) as a way to thank me for helping, something that is only done when a student has finished training honorably. Mr. Carraway took me to coffee for the last time.
Thursday I listened to Mr. Edward Riddick, a Music Therapist who plays in the Rehab Treatment Mall. He was there on my first day of rotation, and he’s been at JUH for 26 years. I paused to enjoy him playing song after song from memory and taking requests from some very mentally ill people, and watching them smile as, just for a moment, their psychosis went away. I told him today was my last day at John Umstead Hospital, and he played ‘Everything’ for me.
Thursday was a very tough day for me. Yes, I received my certificate of completion that said I had successfully served as a Clinical Psychology Intern. Yes, I sold my rather damaged truck to a Mason, who will chop the body off and turn it into a parade car for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Tonight, I listened to The Embers, still playing after 38 years, while eating a funnel cake and a bloomin’ onion with some of my Masonic friends. But, making your final rounds and teaching your last substance abuse class, and transitioning your last patients, is never easy. I gave and received a lot of hugs and handshakes today.
Friday I finished my outplacement, testing all morning, and then getting my final clinical supervision at the Carolina Inn, a very nice restaurant for UNC faculty. No more name badges. No more keys. Everything mailed. Said goodbye to the lady I was caregiving for. I went to Biker Church for the last time for an unexpected wedding; got more hugs, and a Biker Church t-shirt, and the laying on of hands.
I’m no longer a Clinical Psychology Intern. I’ve started to burn, and I’m not even on the playa yet.
