If you set your goals ridiculously high and it's a failure, you will fail above everyone else's success. - James Cameron
After a year of a global pandemic, I've managed to complete 24 goals. It's been a tough year, but I have gotten a good deal done on my list, and I have developed myself a lot.
Body/Martial Arts/Physical Improvement/Testing Myself: I've completed only two goals in this section, but made progress on six others. I ran a Staircase Climb Race in my turnouts, just as the pandemic lockdown was starting. Almost all of the firefighters I was supposed to run with were already locked down, and the fact that I was a volunteer for a station that hadn't locked down was the only reason I was allowed to climb. I also participated in a virtual GoRuck Event, instead of a group event. I kept up on my yearly Spartan Race, also virtual - in fact, I did it twice, as well as the Rugged Maniac Race, and kept up with running at least five races a year (I actually participated in seven virtual races total). I made progress with pushups and situps and burpees, and I'm on my third month of the full year of the GoRuck Tribe/Seek Pain Event.
Mind/Spirit/Centering/Health: I've completed four goals, reading ten new martial arts/spirituality/disaster preparation books (a repeated goal) twice, and also reading ten Psychology-related books, another repeated goal. I also completed a virtual college course on Epidemics, Pandemics, and Outbreaks (pretty useful). I've gotten most of the way through a mindfulness eating goal, kept up on my yearly fasting goal, written a monthly set of haiku every month, read some of my permanent martial arts library, and attended two virtual kink classes. I have meditated daily for two months, and I'm getting back on track with formal zazen, in a virtual zendo. Many of the goals in this section have been delayed due to the pandemic, including sitting in silence and a sesshin. They'll happen.
Maintenance/Shit Got To Be Done: I've made progress with Maintenance goals, with none completed (most take multiple years). I almost had the Whorse ready for duty, but a vehicle fire is not ready for duty. It was a rough year for vehicles, with several expensive repairs and a hit-and-run, but I'm hoping for an easier upcoming year. I kept up with my physical and dental appointments, all of my CEUs and CPR/BLS for both my mental health practitioner and my EMT certifications, and my credit report.
In Case of Zombies/Disaster Preparation: I've completed three Disaster Preparation goals, with four goals in progress. I completed five, and then a repeated goal of ten, Red Cross/CERT-related exercises or classes. I completed all Red Cross Disaster Mental Health and Disaster Health Services G/A/P training requirements, but the pandemic restrictions, my clients, and family stuff have not allowed time for any actual deployments. I have restarted my Firefighter taskbook, but I've not been allowed at the station for a few months due to the pandemic. I have practiced several actual survival/bug-out drills, including the pandemic, wildfires, and a snow/ice storm. A lot of the training I planned on taking this year has not been available due to the pandemic - hopefully, it will be available soon.
Base Station/Ol' Number 3: Base Station goals have been where I've had to put my focus, and I've completed thirteen goals with ten more ongoing goals (more dynamic than the rest on the list), and I've neglected other sections for goals here. We've created a Base Station party/visitor/sitting space, dug out the hillside for a pole barn/garage, installed underground power, built a Gate House for the Old Man, checked the cistern and developed a non-potable water system, installed a gate opener, RV hookups, and the internet, finished a French Drain around the Gate House, a level 2 fire safety zone around all of the infrastructure, and graveled the driveway. Planting a garden and fruit trees, the septic and potable water systems, the pole barn, and finishing the Gate House and the HAM shack are the next goals.
Travel/Adventure/Doing Stuff: Travel and Adventure goals have been the least possible, with few goals in progress and only a couple goals completed. I was under quarantine restrictions repeatedly, and that makes adventures not happen. I had one overnight camping/geocaching trip, where we found some of the oldest geocaches in Oregon - and we were chased by wildfires all the way home. I did get my nipple gauges matched as Portland was locking down for the pandemic, and I completed the Geocaching Finds by Found Date for the third time. I usually would have celebrated with a big geoevent, but not this time. I did manage to host the only socially distanced geoevent of the year for a 200-mile radius on the fuselage of a 727, though. *smile*
